第一，DNS (Did Not Start)：报名但未出赛。
第二，比较常见，DNF (Did Not Finish)：出赛但未完赛。
举例来说，IRONMAN 70.3 Taiwan 的各项限时为游泳: 开赛后1小时10分钟；自行车:开赛后5小时 30 分钟；路跑: 开赛后8小时 30 分钟。
Q: What is DNS/DNF/DQ?
A:Aside from finish time, you may receive a DNS, DNF, or DQ for your race results. What do the abbreviations actually stand for?
1. DNS (Did not start)
When you have signed up for the race but are absent on race day, you will receive a DNS.
2. DNF (Did not finish)
You will receive a DNF for several reasons. Let’s talk about the two most common reasons. First, dropping out amid the race. Second, failure to finish within the cut-off time, – not only the race cut-off time but also the cut-off time for each discipline.
For instance, the cut-off times for the three disciplines of IRONMAN 70.3 Taiwan are:
Swim: 1 hour 10 minutes
Bike: 5 hours and 30 minutes of accumulated race time
Run: 8 hours and 30 minutes of accumulated race time
Therefore, if you fail to finish the bike leg within 5 hours and 30 minutes but still make it to the finish line with sensational 8-hour finish time, sadly, you will still receive a DNF.
3. DQ (Disqualified)
If you violate the race rules, the race referee or race officials can disqualify you from the race. The most common unintentional rule violation is forgetting to stop in the penalty tent in the transition area after receiving a time penalty. The race officials in the penalty tent or transition area will not provide any reminder about the time penalty and therefore it is the participants’ obligation to complete the time penalty in the transition area. Failure to do so can lead to race rules violation and receiving a DQ.
All in all, if you see any of the above abbreviations on your race results, try to think about the causes. Did you forget to complete your time penalty? Or did you exceed the cut-off times in any discipline?
